Carvers: Phil Burke and Leo Lambert
Phil Burke and Leo Lambert represent the Woburn Guild of Carvers, carvers of the Adirondack Carousel’s Blue Heron. The heron was voted by the Woburn Guild as the most challenging of the Carousel animals and gave the club a mission.
Phil’s lifelong love of carving was launched with a gift from his wife 17 years ago—a chickadee carving set. He finds his greatest reward is in the completion of any carving, adding the finishing touches. Currently involved with digital photography, he feels fortunate to reside near an operating carousel at Heritage Plantation in Sandwich, MA, and visits and rides several times each year.
Leo has been carving in the traditional style since 1979. He began carving professionally in 1992 and currently accepts work by commission. He sells cast reproductions of antiques, original works, and works of other artists, and also restores damaged plaster objects and clay sculptures. He offers classes and seminars on woodcarving for woodcarving clubs, schools and commercial establishments. He has also taught Cub Scout packs and students in the Woburn, MA school system. Leo’s works have been exhibited throughout New England. In 1997 he was named Carver of the Year by the New England Woodcarvers Association.
