About the Adirondack Carousel

A Community-Built Celebration of Adirondack Art, Wildlife, and Joy

Where Adirondack History, Creativity, and Community Come Full Circle

The Adirondack Carousel in Saranac Lake is a one-of-a-kind community-built attraction that celebrates the natural beauty and artistic spirit of the Adirondacks. Conceived in 1999 by local woodcarver Karen Loeffler after she saw an article about a woodland-themed carousel, the idea quickly took root among residents who wanted to create something meaningful, fun, and reflective of their region’s wildlife and culture. By 2001, the project was incorporated as a nonprofit, and volunteers, artists, donors, and local officials began the long collaborative effort of bringing the carousel to life.

After years of fundraising, planning, and creative work, land for the carousel was donated by the Village of Saranac Lake in 2006 at historic William Morris Park. Over the following years, dozens of volunteer carvers from across the country crafted hand-carved figures of Adirondack animals – all adorned with at least one carved ladybug, the New York state insect – and local artists painted the regional scenes that decorate the carousel’s canopy. The pavilion, workshop, and gallery space that now houses the carousel was completed, and the Adirondack Carousel officially opened its doors in 2012.

Today, the Adirondack Carousel remains an active and beloved destination for both locals and visitors of all ages. Visitors can enjoy a ride on beautifully carved Adirondack wildlife figures, from an otter or a moose to a black fly, or choose the wheelchair-accessible Chris Craft boat chariot. The enclosed pavilion ensures year-round enjoyment, rain or shine, and the surrounding space invites play and exploration with a nearby playground and gallery offerings. Alongside daily rides, the Carousel hosts special events, birthday parties, community gatherings, and educational experiences rooted in art, nature, and heritage.

More than just a ride, the Adirondack Carousel embodies the spirit of community collaboration and local pride. Every sculpture and painted panel reflects the talents of regional artists and volunteers, making each visit a celebration of the Adirondacks’ wildlife, craft traditions, and friendly atmosphere. Through accessible programming, inclusive pricing options, and ongoing community involvement, the Carousel continues to be a cherished cultural centerpiece in Saranac Lake’s downtown – a place where memories are made and shared across generations.
